In this course, the faculty will discuss the properties, importance and benefits of fibre, as well as addressing some common misconceptions regarding fibre-based feeds in paediatric care.

Assistant Professor Iva Hojsak is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist and Head of the Referral Center for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition and a Deputy Director of the Children’s Hospital Zagreb, Croatia. She graduated from the Medical School of Zagreb, where she also received her PhD degree. In 2019, she was elected as Assistant Professor at University of Zagreb Medical School and University of J.J. Strossmayer Medical School. She has published more than 200 scientific and clinical papers and has been a co-worker in more than 15 international and Croatian scientific projects. 

She held a position of Council Member of the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) as Education Secretary (2017-2020); she is Associate Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition; Board Member of ESPGHAN Young Investigators Forum and was secretary of the ESPGHAN Committee on Nutrition and Head of the Scientific Committee of the Children's Hospital Zagreb. Her main clinical/research interests include intestinal failure, parenteral nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease and probiotics.

Professor Bruno Hauser studied medicine at the Free University of Brussels (VUB). He specialized as a pediatrician at UZ Brussel and UMC Groningen. He worked as a general pediatrician in Ronse and as a Consultant in Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at UZ Brussel. Since 2001 he has worked as Head of the Clinic at the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at UZ Brussel. 

Professor Hauser completed his PhD 'Gastric emptying in children in health and disease' in October 2017. He has more than 100 publications in Pubmed and has delivered more than 100 lectures at international and national conferences. His scientific interest is mainly in Helicobacter pylori, inflammatory bowel diseases, gastric emptying, and cystic fibrosis. He is a regular co-researcher of national and international studies.

Joanne is a Professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota and teaches Advanced Human Nutrition. With the help of current and former graduate students (n=75), she has authored more than 300 scientific articles on dietary fibre, carbohydrates, whole grains, protein, snacking, and the role of diet in disease prevention. 

Joanne was a member of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC). She is a Science Communicator for the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and a member of numerous scientific societies, including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and the American Society for Nutrition (ASN). Dr Slavin has given more than 350 scientific presentations around the world. Dr Slavin grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin which she still owns with her sisters. She has BS, MS, and PhD degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a Registered Dietitian (RDN).
