Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease caused by chronic inflammation and damage to the respiratory system. It is the second most common lung disease in the UK.1 Symptoms include shortness of breath, persistent chesty cough, frequent chest infections and continuous wheezing.2
The main forms of COPD are emphysema (damage to the air sacs in the lungs) and chronic bronchitis (long-term inflammation of the airways).2
COPD can lead to malnutrition and muscle loss in patients which can further impair their function and their health outcomes.1 For people living with COPD, just breathing can require 10x more energy than someone without COPD.3 In addition, they often experience a reduced appetite associated with limited exercise, depression or dyspnoea whilst eating.4
