Recognising those at risk of malnutrition with a validated screening tool is a crucial first step in managing malnutrition. This should be followed by assessment for diagnosis and severity grading.1 Nutritional screening helps identify people at risk of malnutrition, detect unrecognised malnutrition and monitor the effects of nutritional management.
Clinical guidelines recommend nutritional screening is completed both in hospital and community settings.2
Malnutrition is frequently identified and associated with low body weight. However, malnutrition leads to an altered body composition and impaired clinical outcome. Low muscle mass is associated with several negative outcomes. Therefore, identifying and treating malnutrition should have a focus on maintaining or minimising the loss of muscle mass and function.3
