Abstract:
This article discusses the impact of muscle loss to both adult patients and the NHS. Early diagnosis and intervention are fundamental in trying to reduce the impact of this on clinical outcomes as well as NHS costs. One of the interventions discussed in more detail in this article is the management of patients with or at risk of muscle loss and/or malnutrition with oral nutritional supplements containing β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB).
