Terry has been a respiratory nurse for 20 years. She first became interested in respiratory disease and management of respiratory patients when she worked as a Practice Nurse, running long-term conditions clinics. She was the first Practice Nurse in Harrogate to have a spirometer and become a COPD trainer, educating other Practice Nurses how to manage their COPD patients. She then became a specialist Nurse in Secondary Care, obtaining a First Class Honours Degree in Respiratory disease and a Masters in Respiratory Disease Management.

In 2004 she was awarded the Nursing Times Respiratory Nurse of the year award for the work she did following a research study in the needs of patients with very severe COPD. She has co-authored and edited the Oxford University Press Handbook of Respiratory Nursing and has just finished he second edition. Terry has published and presented her work nationally and internationally. She has developed a nutrition training programme for Primary Care with other respiratory specialists. She is the first nurse and non-medic in the UK to be the President of a Respiratory Society. She has been a Consultant Nurse for 6 years, specialising in end-stage COPD, bronchiectasis, IPF and chronic cough and remains passionate about the needs of respiratory patients and their families.
