Abstract:
The NOURISH (Nutritional effect on unplanned readmissions and survival in hospitalised patients) study evaluates the impact of a high protein oral nutritional supplement (ONS) containing β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) on mortality and hospital readmission rates in malnourished hospitalised older adults with a range of cardiopulmonary conditions up to 90 days post-discharge.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Discuss the impact of ONS on older, malnourished patients in community and hospital settings.
Assess the effects of a high protein ONS containing HMB on reducing complications, mortality and hospital readmissions.
Recognise the association between high protein ONS containing HMB, decreased post-discharge mortality and improved nutritional status.
