Difficulty eating
due to dysphagia

For children with serious health conditions, such as cancer and other chronic diseases, maintaining good nutrition can be a significant challenge.1 They may experience difficulty getting the nutrition they need due to a variety of factors related to their disease. Depending on the condition this may be caused by:2-4
Increased energy
expenditure
Altered metabolic
function
Malabsorption of
nutrients due to
vomiting or
diarrhoea
Inflammation
Difficulty eating
due to dysphagia
In many cases, a child’s inadequate nutritional intake may be linked to reduced appetite as a result of their condition and/or treatment – such as chemotherapy.2,3,5-10
Nausea and
vomiting
Gastrointestinal
problems
Changes in sense
of taste or smell
Pain and fatigue
Effective nutritional management is important to support a child’s growth and development.11 Without appropriate nutrition support, children with disease-related malnutrition can be significantly impacted by:7
Increased risk of
infection
Reduced tolerance
to treatment
Increased
frequency and
length of hospital
stay
Decreased quality
of life
Increased
mortality risk
Children with cancer and other chronic diseases may receive different therapeutic interventions, depending on their condition, that can impact the GI tract. For example, children undergoing chemotherapy may experience gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms resulting from GI toxicity induced by the treatment itself.10 Chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cells, including both cancer cells and healthy cells in the GI tract, leading to side effects such as inflammation of the mucosal tissues (mucositis) which can cause pain when swallowing.12-13
Symptoms such as these are associated with a decline in appetite, meaning important nutrients are lost and not replaced,7 contributing to the child's undernutrition.10,14
Children with a reduced appetite or who are unable to consume large volumes of food may benefit from nutritional support to ensure they receive the essential nutrients they need - in the form of energy-dense, low-volume (or ‘compact-style’) oral nutritional supplements (ONS) designed specifically for children.11
Compact-style ONS play a key role in nutrition support strategies and can significantly increase:11
Compliance
Energy intake
Protein intake
Body weight
The use of compact ONS may also promote greater capacity to gradually consume more foods.11 While food is the most important source of nutrition, drinking a compact ONS before their meal can help them meet age appropriate nutrient intake, and has been shown to improve appetite.11
After a bottle of PaediaSure Compact, most children were just as hungry and ate just as much as usual:*15
· 68% of children said they felt just as hungry as before, or even hungrier15
· 80% of parents said their child ate just as much, if not more, after drinking PaediaSure Compact15
PaediaSure Compact has been specially formulated for children at risk of malnutrition who may benefit from a smaller volume of feed.
