The consensus guide ‘A practical guide to identifying and managing GI symptoms in children who require oral nutritional supplements’, supported by Abbott, has been developed by a multi-disciplinary group with a specialist interest in paediatric gastrointestinal issues. It has been designed to support members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) identify, assess and manage GI symptoms in children. It brings all the information together in a concise format that is easy to use on a day-today basis, including recommendations for screening, assessment and monitoring procedures.

Paediatric patients represent a particularly vulnerable group with specific nutritional requirements, but feeding difficulties are unfortunately a common occurrence. Up to 75% of critically ill children and 90% of chronically ill children may be malnourished or have suboptimal nutrition, which in turn can lead to impaired growth and development.

Fibre is an essential nutrient for human health that has short and long-term benefits.1 Despite this, most children, including those with disease-related malnutrition receiving nutrition support, fall short of daily recommended intakes. Evidence to support restriction of fibre in specific disease states is lacking, however, healthcare professionals (HCPs) often advise low fibre diets.

![]()
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines malnutrition as a deficiency, or excess of nutrient intake and/or impaired nutrient utilisation. Undernutrition can be classified into several categories: wasting (low weight for height), stunting (low height for age), underweight (either wasting or stunting, or both), and micronutrient deficiencies.

![]()
Children with NI often experience feeding difficulties, such as oropharyngeal dysphagia, gastroesophageal reflux and altered energy metabolism, meaning they often either have or are at risk of disease-related malnutrition. Find out more about the importance of nutritional screening and intervention.

The term ‘faltering growth’ (previously called ‘failure to thrive’) refers to slower growth or weight gain in childhood than is typically expected for their age and gender. Whilst there are a variety of causes of faltering growth, insufficient nutritional intake is usually the leading cause and it is vital that this is investigated, managed and monitored

Children with chronic respiratory diseases such as cystic fibrosis (CF), bronchiectasis and childhood interstitial lung disease often suffer from malnutrition. Adequate nutritional intake is associated with better outcomes for children with chronic respiratory disease

Disease-related malnutrition in paediatric cancer patients is common and can have a significant impact on patient outcomes as well as the disease trajectory

![]()
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a term which is used for individuals with sensory sensitivity who may avoid eating certain foods. ARFID often leads to selecting eating behaviours, which can result in poor growth, weight and vitamin deficiencies, as well as other health issues

![]()
Gastrointestinal conditions can cause problems with food tolerance, which may mean the child becomes malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. In severe cases, this can lead to malabsorption, affecting their response to nutritional support and their ability to recover

![]()
Identifying malnutrition early is vital to provide timely and appropriate nutritional intervention

STAMP (Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Paediatrics) is a validated nutrition screening tool for use in hospitalised children from 2 weeks to 16 years of age. Developed to aid the early identification and treatment of malnutrition in hospitalised children, it is quick and easy to use, with just 5 simple steps to follow.

MUAC Z-score tapes are a simple, inexpensive and easy way to measure malnutrition risk in children. It is a helpful nutritional assessment for all children as changes over time, particularly for very large or very small children, are easier to understand in order to track the progress of nutritional intervention.

The clinical frailty scale is an inclusive 9-point scale developed to summarise the overall level of Fitness or frailty of an older adult after evaluation by A healthcare professional (HCP).
