The R-MAPP app is an adaptation of the R-MAPP (Remote – Malnutrition APP)1 guidance created by European experts in clinical nutrition in response to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis as a tool for the remote evaluation of nutritional status for COVID-19 outpatients, those in the recovery phase of the disease and for all patients that need nutritional care, but cannot visit their physicians in person. Vitamin D and protein for muscle health
- Abstract
-
This article by Richie Kirwan, discusses the casual effect that vitamin D potentially has in increasing muscle mass. There is emerging evidence for the importance of vitamin D in musculoskeletal health. Therefore, ensuring adequate serum vitamin D levels is a realistic and easy strategy to improve muscle health. Vitamin D, combined with resistance exercise and adequate protein intake could help improve quality of life and reduce the risk of common, chronic diseases of ageing.

- Abstract

This article discusses the importance of muscle mass in improving clinical outcomes and quality of life. There is a need to change the current malnutrition management approach from a focus on weight to targeting muscle mass. Screening tools should include assessment of muscle mass, and there should be a focus on the maintenance of muscle mass as a malnutrition management strategy.

This podcast provides an overview of the gut microbiome and its interactions with the gut-brain axis (GBA) — a bidirectional signaling pathway between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Prof Cryan discusses several animal models of stress and learning that suggest roles for the gut microbiome and human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) in immunity, behaviour, and cognition. Preliminary intervention studies in humans are also discussed.

Fibre: An essential nutrient for children in health and disease – applying recommendations of an expert consensus
- Abstract
-
Fibre is an essential nutrient for human health that has short and long-term benefits.1 Despite this, most children, including those with disease-related malnutrition receiving nutrition support, fall short of daily recommended intakes. Evidence to support restriction of fibre in specific disease states is lacking, however, healthcare professionals (HCPs) often advise low fibre diets.

Use of peptide feeds in children with disease‐related malnutrition
- Abstract

Paediatric patients represent a particularly vulnerable group with specific nutritional requirements, but feeding difficulties are unfortunately a common occurrence. Up to 75% of critically ill children and 90% of chronically ill children may be malnourished or have suboptimal nutrition, which in turn can lead to impaired growth and development.

Vital 1.5kcal Case Study: Sue
- Abstract
-
Sue is a 42 year old female patient with a subtotal colectomy and ileostomy. She was admitted to hospital with chronic diarrhoea, and investigation showed evidence of ulceration of the ileosigmoid anastamosis and terminal ileum. During this admission she had numerous medical interventions such as steroid therapy, blood and ferritin transfusions, diuretics and a trial of Creon. She was fed via nasogastric (NG) feeding tube as she was only consuming half of her meals. Previously she had unsuccessfully trialled various whole protein oral nutritional supplements (ONS) and modular supplements, which she had felt exacerbated the diarrhoea.

He develop loose stools (type 7 on the Bristol Stool Chart) which persisted for four weeks and Metronidazole was prescribed for suspected C.difficile. His loose watery stools persisted and after a flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy were performed, Rupert was diagnosed with non-infective gastroenteritis and colitis. Codeine phosphate, Citalopram, Omeprazole, Prednisolone were trialled during this time. Rupert was only managing to consume a quarter of his meals and was prescribed whole protein oral nutritional supplements (ONS).

Abbott Proconnect - R-MAPP
- Abstract
-
The R-MAPP app is an adaptation of the R-MAPP (Remote – Malnutrition APP)1 guidance created by European experts in clinical nutrition in response to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis as a tool for the remote evaluation of nutritional status for COVID-19 outpatients, those in the recovery phase of the disease and for all patients that need nutritional care, but cannot visit their physicians in person. It could be suitable for every situation in the future that might limit the availability of healthcare system to broaden scope.
